Cheppad Grama Panchayat comes under Karthikappally Taluk and Muthukulam Block Panchayat in Alappuzha district. The Panchayat has an area of 12.67 square kilometres. Following the 2025 ward delimitation, the Panchayat consists of 16 wards. Cheppad stands firmly rooted in an ancient and rich cultural heritage. In August 1955, a struggle for rights known as the “Alappurathu Samaram” began in Cheppad against the landlord system and slavery that prevailed in the erstwhile Travancore-Cochin State. The “Land Reforms Act of 1967” also had a significant impact on the history of Cheppad. As a result of the tenancy laws, many people who did not own even a small piece of land became landowners. Before the formation of Panchayats, and prior to the integration of Travancore and Cochin, the first President of the Village Union was Eerickal Sivasankara Pillai. Based on Cheppad Village, the Cheppad Panchayat was established in 1964. The first President of this local administrative body was Vallikkattusseril Chandrasekhara Pillai. Cheppad Panchayat falls within the Onattukara agricultural climatic zone. It is bordered by Pathiyoor and Muthukulam Panchayats to the south, Pallippad Panchayat and Haripad Municipality to the north, Chettikulangara Panchayat to the east, and Chingoli Panchayat to the west. About 90% of the Panchayat area is covered by sandy alluvial soil, while clayey soil is mainly found in the eastern part. Various cultural organisations have been functioning in the Panchayat, providing a platform for cultural renaissance and the development of artistic and sporting interests. Evoor Sreekrishna Vilasam Kathakali Yogam, Evoor Kannampallil Kathakali Yogam, and Mozhoor Kathakali Yogam have made commendable contributions to promoting Kathakali, the traditional art form of Kerala.
